Dealers refused to buy milk produced by Dalit family

By the Jagaran Media Center
The milk dealers in the local market at Geta VDC of Kailali district refused to buy the milk produced by a Dalit family, even at the half of the regular price.
Milk produced by Shanti B. K. of Geta VDC-7 was not accepted by local milk dealers who claimed that people would not accept the dairy products if they knew they were buying milk from a Dalit.
Shanti B. K. of Geta VDC-7 managed to buy a buffalo by taking Rs 10,000 loan from the Rural Development Bank Attariya on 17 November 2005 after she found out that her neighbor's were making good money by selling buffalo milk.

Spouse Bir Bahadur B. K. who works also supported her to do the business.
Shanti is supposed to pay Rs 220 per week to the bank including interest on the debt.

The milk dealer Puskar Panta asked her whether she was mentally fit when B. K. asked him to buy her buffalo’s milk. The resident of ward 4 of the same VDC Panta discriminated against her for being a Dalit woman. Not only Panta, other people from the neighborhood Dhan Bahadur Bohora, Keshav Bista and Dhouli Bista also refused to buy from her at the half price, claiming that the customers would not buy milk if they knew that they were receiving milk from a Dalit.

Shanti has sought help from different local Dalit organizations to create a favorable environment in the society sell her buffalo milk. There are lots of Dalit families in the Baitadi district who share Shanti’s woes.  The chief of the Milk Processing Centre, run by Milan Gramin Sangh (Milan Rural Association) has asked the Dalit members of the society not to bring milk to the dairy.
