Dalits in News

India may be a land of 30 million Gods with 5000 years of history but Dalits are the worst victims for centuries. It may be a land where all animals, trees, and stones are worshipped as Gods but it is a living hell for Dalits. It may be a land of saints, babas, mahatmas, and yogis but Dalits are discriminated everyday without any shame. It is a place where thousands of Dalits –men, women and children - are being kicked, killed, maimed, raped, humiliated, and denied basic human rights for no fault of theirs other than being born in a Dalit caste. There is no exception even for a literate, highly educated, high official, or a person holding a political position. Every Dalit will be reminded somewhere somehow of his/her low position in the hierarchical caste system that started some 3000 years ago and mother of all oppressive systems of the world like American Slavery, South African Apartheid, German Jewish holocaust. At times, entire Dalit settlements are torched and entire Dalit population is punished at will to teach them all a lesson with complete impunity. Villages are the hotbeds for this type of atrocities though cities are no exception. There have been many Emmet Tills, James Byrds everyday in India. Very negligible portion of these atrocities come to light due to lack of interest in media and callous attitude of officialdom. Though many laws exist in the Indian judicial system to punish such crimes, hardly anyone gets punished.

This link is not designed to tell all those horror stories because they are innumerous and mind boggling. But, here we collected a few stories that a civilized world never even think of happening to anyone in the entire world in this technologically advanced era. This is an attempt to give an idea to the reader of the discrimination and deprivation Dalits face every day even after more than a half century of Indian Independence.

While discussing Dalit issues with others (both non-Dalits and non-Indians), it is hard for me to make them believe that such incidents happen to Dalits on regular basis. Some may even think that the stories may have been made up to gain sympathy. So, at times, I send them internet links for authenticity. This link is developed to ease my job.

Please click the following links to read some of the bizarre stories of their discrimination and exploitation. A few success stories as well listed here to let the reader know how Dalits are coming up in life despite all odds against them, mostly with the inspiration and the efforts of Dr Ambedkar to improve their lot.
